March Minis – Day 1 of Mixed Media Challenge

Day 1 of the Mixed Media March Minis creative challenge.

Today’s mini challenge was a return to childhood art materials – crayons! I’d melted crayons in my work before – one of my favorite pieces, Fisheye, started with melted crayons on canvas board.

Only one problem, the heat in South Texas tends to melt crayons even when you don’t want them to melt! So my collection of crayons turned out to be pretty pathetic. Okay – let’s just give it a try. Not making a Mona Lisa-quality work here – just a mini challenge to explore, experiment and improvise!

So, I got out my trusty heat gun and melted some blobs of not-the-prettiest-colors of crayon on a 5″x5″ piece of 140 lb cold press watercolor paper.

The results were pretty dull.

So, knowing that melted crayon (wax) would act as a resist, I covered the piece with black gesso.

A slight improvement when I wiped some of the gesso off. But it still needed something…

So, I added some rusty washers and chain. And a high gloss finish. The shiny finish really makes the crayon “pop” and I actually love this little mini now.

The links above are the actual materials and tools that I use.

In the March Minis Zine, you’ll find 31 mini challenges. Each day, pick one for inspiration or a new technique to play with.
