In 2014, Papirmaas and Brown Paper Bag hosted a Collage Scrap Exchange. I was starting to get serious about collage at the time and the idea really intrigued me. The organizers would match you up with another collage artist and you would send each other scraps of your precious ephemera. Then, each artist would create a work, primarily using the new-to-them scraps.
Not only was it a really fun challenge to work with images and ephemera that someone else picked out, but I also got to “virtually” meet my partner, Kevin Sampsell of Portland, who I think is kind of a big deal in the contemporary collage world. You can see some of his collage work here and here. He also wrote a series of columns for The Rumpus, which you can explore here. Additionally, Sampsell, along with fellow Portland, OR, collage artists Leslie Harper and A.M. O’Malley, started a monthly collage night!
The image above is something I created with some of the scraps sent to me. There is an archive of the Collage Scrap Exchange here, and I find it great for inspiration. If you would like to participate in a new Collage Exchange, let me know and I’ll get you paired up with another kindred spirit. Details of Play on Words Design’s upcoming Collage Exchange are in the works. Sign up for our email list and you’ll be the first to know!
